MASSACHUSETTS SCRAP TIRE BRIEFING SHEET
STATE REGULATIONS
The current Solid Waste Management Facility Regulations require the following:
· Effective January 1992, bans whole tires from landfills;
· Shredded tires may be landfilled;
· Tire disposal and management policy requires storage, collection, processing
and disposal sites to be approved by the Department of Environmental Protection
and meet specific permit criteria;
· Scrap tire collection and processing facilities demonstrating that
the scrap tires and/or shredded materials are being recycled or reused are exempt
from solid waste regulations; and
· Requires waste tire storage sites to obtain a permit or written county
or city authorization to operate. Cities and counties are responsible for assuring
compliance with the law, although they may request that DEQ assume this responsibility.
MAJOR MARKETS
One processor manufactures commercial fishing and other industrial equipment
from scrap tires.
