ALASKA SCRAP TIRE BRIEFING SHEET
STATE REGULATIONS
The state has a Solid Waste Management plan that includes, but does not
deal specifically with, scrap tires. Tires are generally landfilled and tire
piles do not exceed 0.5 million tires.
Since 2003, the state collects a $2.00 fee on each new tire sold, paid at point of purchase. All money collected from the fee goes to the state's general revenue fund.
MAJOR MARKETS
The current recycling bill gives bidders' preference to recycled products.
Some tires are used as fuel in an RDF plant. A materials exchange lists some
scrap tires, principally for use as dock bumpers. Some tires in Anchorage are
used in the liner of a landfill.
The Alaska Department of Transportation was the first in the United States to try rubberized asphalt. However, no current testing is contemplated. A test is being funded to investigate the use of shredded tires as an insulation material, principally for roadbeds.
