WASHINGTON, D.C.December 19, 2007 – President George Bush today signed into law energy legislation today that includes an RMA-advocated provision to create a tire fuel efficiency consumer information program. The Senate passed the measure last week and the House passed it yesterday.

The provision establishes a national consumer information program for tire fuel efficiency. It requires the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to design a rating system for tires and requires that tire manufactures provide point-of-sale information about tire fuel efficiency for their products.

“RMA has advocated this approach to Congress for two years and we are pleased that our efforts have been successful,” said RMA President and CEO Donald B. Shea. “This measure will give consumers additional, useful information about tires to help them purchase products that best meet their driving needs.”

The bill also requires the government to undertake an education effort to inform motorists about the effect of proper tire care on vehicle fuel economy.
